With Tea Tree and Spearmint Essential oils!
Alright, who loves a good body scrub around here? 👋
I, for one, am a huge believer in body scrubs. They quite literally remove old, dry skin and build up in your pores. After just one use, your skin will feel fresh, invigorated, and moisturized. I’m in love with this blend of Tea Tree, Spearmint, and Lemon for the summer! Plus it’s the perfect addition to any self care routine!
But, not all scrubs are created equal. As late as July 2019, the deadline, cosmetic companies were allowed the production of “rinse off” products with plastic microbeads. They were not only in rinse off products such as body washes or scrubs, but acne treatments and toothpastes as well.
What’s the big deal, how does it impact our lives?
To start, our oceans are our lives. Covering the vast majority of our planet and eco system. 95-99.9% of these microscopic beads are removed by settling at water treatment facilities. The rest end up right in our very own rivers and oceans. Further more, the marine life that reside may mistake those very beads for food. Research suggests these microbeads are being consumed by micro marine life and being transferred via the food chain. A build up of the plastics can lead to hormone stunting chemical compounds, such as BPA, to leach into the bloodstream. Those fish are then caught and served to humans and livestock. A never ending circle.
There is not enough research to suggest human risk, however, it is safe to assume that with heavy consumption of seafood, one may unwittingly consume harmful amounts of poison. In fish, studies show harmful effects from hormonal imbalance, reproductive organ health, and stymied growth to physically blocked intestinal tracts.
Congress took a huge leap towards the health of our eco system by creating a national ban, the Microbead-Free Waters Act of 2015. States and municipalities had already begun to regulate or ban the use of microbeads. This Act, went into effect with deadlines as of July of 2019. Companies such as St. Ives (no affiliation, I’ve just loved their products) have been doing this for years and even recommitted themselves after this act took effect!
I applaud our leaders for taking action, as many states have done previously, and showing solidarity in the concern for our ecosystem. One small step in the right direction…
I like taking matters into my own hands when it comes to health. I haven’t always been this way or even remotely conscious. I, like others, have grown and cultivated my knowledge base and continue to do so. So, in the spirit of taking control of your own life and to help minimize your own footprint, here’s a wonderful body scrub. This combo of coffee and essential oils will feel indulgent and is one of my favorite blends. The added bonus is doing your part to preserve this beautiful planet of ours! 🌎
All Natural Hemp & Coffee Scrub with Tea Tree & Spearmint
What you will need:
- 1/2 cup Himalayan Salt
- 1/2 cup roasted coffee grounds
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon almond oil
- 1 teaspoon CBD/ Hemp Oil
- 1 teaspoon vegetable glycerine as an emulsifier
- 3 drops Spearmint E.O. (5 if no lemon)
- 3 drops Lemon E.O. (Optional)
- 5 drops of Tea Tree E.O.
- A sealable jar. Bonus for recycled!
I start by combining all dry ingredients. The Himalayan salt, I found at Dollar Tree!! It is 100% pure and a steal! The coffee grounds are leftovers from morning coffee. I allowed them to air dry, then roasted low in the oven to allow the grounds to dry thoroughly.
Next add your oils to the mixture. I like to place them all on top and mix once all carrier and essential oils are added. 3 drops of both Spearmint and Lemon oils. 5 drops of Tea Tree oil. I like the balance the lemon adds. But Spearmint and Tea Tree alone are wonderful and spa like.
Make sure to thoroughly combine your mixture and scoop into a jar with a sealable lid.
I doubled the scrub mixture to replenish my old favorite that I ran out of. And made an extra using a pretty recycled amber glass candle jar.
The blend of oils will awaken your senses and invigorate your skin. Tea tree is known for it’s amazing skin benefits such as fighting acne. Lemon adds a blemish fighting element as well. The coffee helps to stimulate blood flow and can improve the look of cellulite and stretch marks.
I added Cannacell Beauty Oil, a hemp stem cell oil for the added benefits of hemp. You can leave this out or use another hemp based oil or even CBD.
